Algoma University Faculty Collective Agreement

OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas said Algoma`s faculty deserves much more respect from the employer. ALGOMA UNIVERSITY PRESS RELEASE ********* * * The faculty of Algoma University, represented by the Public Utilities Union of Ontario (OPSEU), presented a “No Board” after conciliation was not concluded. The “No Board” is launching a 17-day countdown on possible employment actions that could begin as early as Tuesday, March 27. Matthews said the problem was clear: “There is still time for the employer to reverse the trend. We are ready to do everything in our power to ensure that the University of Algoma negotiates a fair agreement. The Algoma University Faculty Association has 225 members in two bargaining units, including full-time and contract faculties. Contract negotiations of the faculty are continuing, with a strike period until March 4. I want to reassure faculty members that they have exceeded PAHO`s 155,000 members. “This merger is the kind of forward-looking steps that are needed in Ontario`s small academic sector. OpSEU`s model, which works so well for NOSM, will give our faculty the best of both worlds. We will be able to address broader faculty issues through our membership in the Canadian Association of Teaching Scholars and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. At the same time, we will add the strength of a large union to lead the struggles our members face and enable us to play a role in the broader struggle for social justice. » Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario – Faculty members from Algoma University have joined colleagues at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and the faculty of Ontario`s 24 colleges of art and applicator technology as members of the Public Utilities Union of Ontario (OPSEU).

“We are all too familiar with the battles facing contract faculties across Ontario,” thomas said. “Unfortunately, we have heard many horror stories from the thousands of conventional faculties that we have announced through our current organizational opening action. We will stand with the Faculty of Algoma in its fight for fair treatment. PAHO Bargaining Team Chair Pelham Matthews said he was troubled that Algoma University`s faculty employer had offered lower pay than any other university in Ontario. “We are pleased to welcome them to the growing number of faculty members at the university and university who trust OPSEU.” This collection is a great resource for students, graduates or anyone who is currently looking for a job.
